how do prepare before first starting pointe shoes in Ballet?
Ok, so I am 13 years old and I just started Ballet this September, I need to do 4-5 years of ballet before I can start preparing for pointe shoes, but I am curious, how does you teacher evaluate you, how do you know you are ready for pointe?
The first step is basic technique classes. To start dancing en pointe, a dancer needs a strong technical foundation. This means control of turn out, strength, proper alignment, etc.
I wouldn’t jump and say it will take you 4 or 5 years. If you were seven, then that’s probably true, but at your age, people progress and gain strength much faster.
A teacher will evaluate you every single day you go in to take class. He or she will watch your progression until you are ready. “Ready” would be when you have a strong enough technical foundation that will allow you to dance en pointe without injuring yourself. You must have strong ankles and feet (pointe shoes are very hard, so you need strength to properly roll through the shank) and good alignment (no swayback or tucked pelvis, etc). You also must have the drive and motivation and patience to work hard and slowly.
Once your teacher deems you ready to begin pre-pointe work, you will start classes that specifically prepare you for dancing en pointe. This will include a great deal more of feet/ankle strengthening, as well as other aspects.
Good luck, and enjoy!! Dance like there’s no tomorrow :]
(btw, Artemis’s answer is VERY good, and since she’s a Ballet teacher, it’s a very good source. Follow her advice!)
