What to wear to a matinee Ballet?
This weekend I am going to the ballet with my college fine arts class. Our school is in Portland, OR (I believe this is relevant to my question) and we will be attending the matinee performance.
I’d like to know what is most appropriate to wear. Two weeks ago we went to a play and I way over-dressed just by wearing a skirt, nice shirt and flats. I obviously know that in this case elaborate ballgowns are not needed — but I need to figure out if I need to go shopping to get something acceptable or not (I have a very limited selection of clothes here).
I just don’t want to make a fool of myself, because there are a lot of people in my program who don’t take me seriously because I am quiet and they always seem to be more judgmental when we go to these events.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Matinee performances are traditionally quite casual as they were, at the time of their creation, intended for Sunday afternoons and priced so that the general public (read “poor to middle class”) could attend whereas evening performances were generally reserved for the wealthy. Nowadays it’s not taboo to wear jeans to a show but I would say that that’s about the borderline. If you wear jeans make sure they’re nice ones. Avoid things like message t-shirts and sleeveless, keep it classy. The top end is probably, as you said, skirts and flats and such. If it’s in daytime colors that’s fine.
The best advice, though, is to not worry about it too much. As a former dancer I know that as long as torn holes and BO weren’t involved, nobody really cared. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in.
