some information on taking Ballet please?
i’m 17 and i’m interested in taking ballet, i know a small studio nearby that does all types of dancing including Adult Ballet… i’ve never done ballet before but i want to do something new that i’ll enjoy.
so i have a few questions about it:
- some people say you should go to a Ballet Academy rather than a studio to learn? is this true? even if you don’t intend on making a profession of ballet (i only want to learn to enjoy it).
- what clothing should you wear? (the studio im considering says “comfortable clothing” – can someone elaborate on this?
and overall, can anyone whose taken ballet class offer some information about it?
It is generally better to go to a ballet academy, but it isn’t necessary. Adult open classes at a ballet academy will be cheaper and better than a small studio. At a ballet academy you would be guaranteed a sprung or floating floor with marley on top. You may or may not get this at a small studio. Also the teachers at a ballet academy will be better. The flooring helps prevent injury and your small studio may have this and that would be fine. Even if you are learning for fun, it is nice to make sure you learn correctly and you have a better shot at this at a ballet academy than at a small recital studio. The teachers are trained very differently. Also. ballet academies offer class cards for adults in open classes and because they are not a small recital school, they can afford to offer them cheaper and they usually do. Depending on where you are individual classes can be as little as $10-$15 each with a class card.
For ballet class you should wear something that you can move in and the teacher can see your body well in. That standard would be a leotard and ballet tights. However, in many adult classes, student wear yoga pants and a tank top or t-shirt. Just don’t wear anything baggy or the teacher cannot give you corrections. You should also get a pair of pink leather full sole ballet slippers. They are better for beginners than canvas split soles. They work your feet more and help build an arch in them.
Ballet class is a wonderful recreational hobby. You may be a little overwhelmed at first, but there is a lot of repetition in ballet and you will soon learn the names of everything and how to execute things properly. You will gain core strength witch will give you a better posture. Class has 3 parts. It first starts at a Ballet Barre for your barre exercises then you move to the center and at then across the floor for moving or turning combinations. Make sure you come to class early so you can warm up a bit and stretch first.
Good luck and have fun dancing!
